How to Price?

2 min read

So I’m working on finishing up this epic Steampunk pirate hat for sale - I knitted and felt it all myself out of several kinds of brown wool yarn. I have blocked and shaped it nicely. There is a HUGE fluffy boa of natural-looking “feathery” faux fur yarn knitted and felted into the edge of the brim. I am installing a “lining band” (looks like a sweatband, but sewn completely in place) for stability. I’m going to be decorating it with lots of neat little bits and bobs and pieces of chain and awesome things.

Like I said, this hat is going to be EPIC.

According to Etsy, I should start my pricing on this around $200.

Is this an acceptable price to pay for a truly one-of-a-kind costume piece? I’m not used to making such big-ticket items, but I don’t want to feel like I’m underpaying myself for all the work I put into this hat - I initially made it almost 3 years ago, and waited to finish it until I had a nice collection of decorations for it/had an established shop.

I have sold one pirate hat before, and I practically gave it away for $20. This thing was my masterpiece - I hand-crocheted and stained the lace, embroidered a custom brocade pattern onto it before felting, and I crocheted a laceweight netting to drape and sew to it (with some of my favorite glow-in-the-dark beads). I was unhappy with myself and told myself I would never let anyone take advantage of my kindness that much again - I spent SO MUCH TIME and effort making this thing and got nothing out of it (part of that $20 was used to ship it).

Visit my Etsy shop and use the coupon code MECTOAMORE at checkout to receive 15% off anything in my shop over $25!

I also take custom orders! Take a gander at my Deviantart to see my other work! I should have a few hats finished in the coming days!

Since I don’t have photoshop or anything similar, I’m just going to do this by hand on some of the leftover poster board from the “what’s your malfunction” video.

It’s also my first time doing actual art in a loooooooong time.

So right now, I’m looking up references for pixelated cherry blossoms (sakura) for this. I’m contemplating on doing this in watercolour pencils or in acrylics (though part of it’s going to be in acrylic for sure, because metallics)

What do you guys think? Any opinions?

I’m more than happy to loan my OCs out if anyone has neato ideas for them… Just consult me for permission (I’d like to know first LOL) and also for canon info about said OCs! I love making cameos in others’ work… especially since I don’t fic/art much myself and someone needs to play with my poor OCs…

Current OCs:

Miyu the Tribal Mermaid
Twitch a.k.a. CODEX (sorry about the ONE shoddy photomanip for the moment, hopefully I'll have more better stuff up soon!)

Well, I'm finalizing everything for my automaton character - I would say fanbot, but she's kind of been in my head for years before that... Previously I was designing a rough version of her (based far more on the anime Chobits than it is now) for the Abney Park tabletop RPG Airship Pirates (which I can't get anyone to play with me). Before that I was still trying to come up with an automaton character for general Steampunk cosplaying, but with a lack of any sort of world or backstory it was really slow development.

Anyways, so now I have my character/fanbot pretty finalized (in story and general design, anyways, not done with facial design yet). My dilemma is this... My character has had her memory erased/tampered with, and thus the name she currently goes by is more of a nickname based on her malfunctioning (due to having her head tinkered with). I did finally decide on her original name (the one she was given before her memory loss)... but I don't know whether to introduce her as her "current" (nick)name, or as her "original" name.

...For that matter, would everyone prefer to have her backstory laid out from the beginning, or to find it out organically when the character does through fiction and RPG?

I need opinions. Let me know what you think! It's been a while since I did art for art's sake, and not practical things like clothing :P
