So I’m working on finishing up this epic Steampunk pirate hat for sale - I knitted and felt it all myself out of several kinds of brown wool yarn. I have blocked and shaped it nicely. There is a HUGE fluffy boa of natural-looking “feathery” faux fur yarn knitted and felted into the edge of the brim. I am installing a “lining band” (looks like a sweatband, but sewn completely in place) for stability. I’m going to be decorating it with lots of neat little bits and bobs and pieces of chain and awesome things.
Like I said, this hat is going to be EPIC.
According to Etsy, I should start my pricing on this around $200.
Is this an acceptable price to pay for a truly one-of-a-kind costume piece? I’m not used to making such big-ticket items, but I don’t want to feel like I’m underpaying myself for all the work I put into this hat - I initially made it almost 3 years ago, and waited to finish it until I had a nice collection of decorations for it/had an established shop.
I have sold one pirate hat before, and I practically gave it away for $20. This thing was my masterpiece - I hand-crocheted and stained the lace, embroidered a custom brocade pattern onto it before felting, and I crocheted a laceweight netting to drape and sew to it (with some of my favorite glow-in-the-dark beads). I was unhappy with myself and told myself I would never let anyone take advantage of my kindness that much again - I spent SO MUCH TIME and effort making this thing and got nothing out of it (part of that $20 was used to ship it).
